Land Title Association: Get Involved!

Recently, we had the opportunity to attend two of the New York State Land Title Association (NYSLTA) Town Hall meetings. One was held in was held in Tarrytown, New York and the other in Carle Place, New York. I firmly believe that you cannot help your clients unless you understand their business. The only way to do that is to be involved in organizations that either promote or educate their profession.

This was an eye opening experience. If you are in any way involved in the Title Industry—Agent, Underwriter, Attorney or Vendor—being active in your local state organization is crucial to your professional success. Living in New York, we are used to there being many rules (and sometimes they feel like roadblocks) to doing business.

We are here to applaud the NYSLTA organization. There have been many DFS (Department of Financial Services; aka State Insurance Department) regulations that the association has had to work through. Many of your determined and committed peers have spent countless hours weeding through proposed legislation. They have put forth much time and effort to be sure that the Title Profession has had their voice heard by the various regulatory agencies, banks and municipalities.

The meeting went over several key topics ranging from licensing, forms and disclosures, the new Cybersecurity Regulation, Regulation 208 (devised to reduce “kickbacks and improper expenses”) and other areas of grave concern. The presenters were not only knowledgeable, but also extremely passionate about their presentations.

If you are not a member of your local Land Title Association, I urge you to look into it. Not only can you be involved at a national level through the American Land Title Association (ALTA), there are also many individual state land title associations as well. When you join, be more than a check writer; Get involved. There are so many opportunities to help shape the future of your profession!
